A Closer Look at Dry Eyes

Your tears are made of 3 layers:

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

Tear production plays an important role in preventing dry eye, which can occur when something goes wrong with your tear production or the glands that produce tears become inflamed.

We take the time to examine your eyes and find the treatment that can address the specific cause of your dry eyes.

How MGD Contributes to Dry Eye

Inflammation of the glands that line your eyelids can lead to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD can reduce oil production in your tears, causing water to evaporate and leading to dryness.

With MGD, the oils produced by your meibomian glands can become thicker and clog the glands, leading to inflammation, eyelid irritation, and dry eye symptoms such as eye irritation, watery eyes, and a scratchy feeling.

We can help you find relief from MGD through a treatment method known as meibomian gland expression.

Our Dry Eye Treatments

We offer a variety of dry eye treatments and solutions, including OptiLight by Lumenis, meibomian gland expression, and other medical treatments to help address your dry eye symptoms and help you find relief.

Our team can work with your insurance provider to help get some of these treatment methods covered.

Meibomian gland expression is an effective, non-invasive treatment method that can help provide relief for patients dealing with dry eyes. Meibomian gland expression involves applying gentle pressure to the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil layer of your tear film.

Expressing oil in your tear glands can help improve the quality and quantity of your tears and reduce dry eye symptoms, such as irritation, redness, and watery eyes.

First line treatment includes over the counter artificial tears (Optase drops) and night time ointments (Optase ointment) to counter mild to moderate dry eye syndrome.

If you’re dealing with chronic dry eye, medicated eye drops such as RESTASIS and Xiidra can help. RESTASIS eye drops contain an active ingredient that can help reduce inflammation and increase your eye’s natural ability to produce tears.

Xiidra is a prescription eye drop that targets the source of inflammation that can cause uncomfortable dry eye symptoms. When used twice daily, Xiidra eye drops can provide lasting relief from dry eyes.

Warm compresses are an accessible treatment option we offer for our patients. Applying moist warm heat to your eyelids can stimulate blood flow and help loosen blockages preventing effective tear production. You can make a warm compress with a clean cloth and warm water.

We carry the Optase Heat Masks in our office for the convenience of our patients to purchase. The Optase Moist Heat Mask is a reusable mask that can help soothe symptoms of dry eye and MGD. It’s designed to loosen the protective oils produced in your eyelids, which are essential for healthy tear production.
